About Me, About My Work
Glass is the most fascinating medium I have ever worked in!
Always colourful, always vibrant, always unique.
With the ability to produce fantastic reflections of the colours used, and exciting shadows that change with the light.
It is the fluidity and luminosity that inspire me. I design pieces that are at their best with the light streaming through them. My work has been likened to a cross between contemporary stained glass and pieces of coral!
Through glass I have found the purest form of expression for my design concepts. Ideas often stem from experiences with nature---from a soft green fern unfurling in spring, to the tinkle of dripping icicles on a sunny winter morning.
Each piece is thoughtfully planned, carefully designed, each element added to enhance the effect of the previous layers. Once I am happy with the design it is kiln fired at over 800 degrees centigrade. It takes over 24 hours to fuse together all the elements. Slow to heat up and slow to cool, ensures the glass doesn’t fall prey to thermal shock and shatter. If the piece is destined to become a plate or bowl it will undergo a second, lower temperature firing for another 24 hours. This allows it to slump and take on the form of the mould.
Opening the kiln at the end of firing is always an exciting moment! Discovering what worked, what didn’t, always thinking about ideas for the next piece. There is always the next piece!
Three dimensional glass pieces are so tactile---the smoothness is so sensual, the weight of it in your hands. The sense of quality, strength and yet fragility all add to the experience of feeling as well as seeing a work of art in glass.
